Dashcam video has been released which shows the moment a father dug himself out of a shallow grave and crawled for help after he and his son were attacked by burglars.
Forrest “Butch” Bowyer survived after having his throat cut “from ear to ear” before dragging himself to a nearby road in 2002.
His 12-year-old son Brett was killed after he was shot three times and thrown on top of his father in the grave in Russell County, Alabama.
Michael Carruth and Jimmy Brooks have been on death row for the last 12 years for the murder and attempted murder.
They posed as police officers and arrived at Mr Bowyer”s home to arrest him for drug possession on 18 February, 2002.
After he asked what would happen to his son alone in the house, the men handcuffed them both and drove them to where US Highway 431 was being built.
They asked him about a safe, before driving back to his home to get a box containing more than $40,000 in cash and then returning to the construction site.
Mr Bowyer, a used car salesman, then had his throat cut, before his son was shot dead.
In the footage, a blood-stained Mr Bowyer can be heard identifying one of the attackers and insisting officers get his son before he receives medical attention as he clutches a cloth to his neck.
A sheriff”s deputy tells his dispatch: “I got a man that”s been cut to hell and said his son”s been shot three times, is buried in a grave down here at Uchee, and he wants to go get him.
“He (Butch) was buried and dug himself out, this is a bad one.”
Carruth and Brooks were sentenced to death in 2003.
They were also convicted over their roles in the killing of husband and wife Thurman Ray Ratliff, 68, and Katherine Combs Ratliff, 62 also in 2002.
A third man, Edward Gary Jr, was jailed for life without parole for the couple”s murder.
