Footballer Adam Johnson has said that intimate photos of his nether regions found on his phone had been taken to ‘show to the doctor’.
As he delivered evidence at the trial, the Sunderland winger was quizzed about a photo of his penis, taken on his phone in August 2013.
Orlando Pownall QC, defending Johnson, said: ‘It is not being suggested that this picture was taken for fun or that you were going to send it to someone?
Johnson replied: ‘No.’
Pownall then quizzed Johnson why he had taken a photo of ‘his nether regions’, before the footballer said it was ‘to show the doctor.’
Johnson also admitted knowing that the teenage girl who he stands accused of having sexual activity with, was 15 years old ‘pretty much as soon as we started talking’.
He said: ‘When I first saw her at games, like, I got to know her and saw her more.’
Johnson then recalled how the pair met for the first time in a secluded car park on January 17 last year – after messaging each other for 16 days on Whatsapp.
He signed two football shirts for the girl, before dropping her at a shop to ‘buy sweets or something.’
It was after the pair’s initial meeting that the nature of their messages took a turn, with Johnson asking about the possibility of a ‘thank you kiss.’
When quizzed as to why he didn’t tell police about the Whatsapp messages, Johnson said: ‘I hoped that she had deleted the messages.
‘I knew how inappropriate they were and I didn’t know where they were going to leave me if she hadn’t.’
Johnson has pleaded guilty to grooming and kissing a 15-year-old schoolgirl, but has denied two more serious charges of sexual activity.
