Lottery winner kept the jackpot ticket in his wallet for a week

Gerry Cannings, 63, and his wife Lisa, 48, bizarrely didn’t want guests over to toast their windfall with “dust sheets everywhere”.

Lisa, from Deeping St James, near Peterborough in Cambs, said: “I know it sounds mad, but we had a guy in to paint the whole house.

“We’d been planning it for ages and had packed everything into boxes. We had dust sheets everywhere and literally didn’t have anywhere for people to sit.

But they vowed not to spoil their kids – and will make Sam wait until his birthday in June before he gets the Xbox he wants.

Gerry said: “We will help them buy houses and make sure they are comfortable but we don’t want money to take over their lives.”

The golfer will also spend £2,999 on a flight in a Spit-fire and the couple will go on a tour of New Zealand.
