Protesters have swarmed around the private members club Shoreditch House in protest against the closure of the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais.
Demonstrators wearing black and with their faces covered hurled smoke bombs towards the entrance to the building, in which the French Ambassador for International Investment and CEO of Business France, Muriel Penicaud, was reportedly attending an event.
One 27-year-old told the Standard: ‘I was just walking back from work and there was a bunch of people who had their faces covered, it looked like they were trying to get into Shoreditch House.
‘Police were blocking the entrance and members and non-members couldn’t get in the door.
‘They were telling people to stand back and not go near the front door.’
He added that those protesting were giving out flyers and holding banners which read ‘No Borders’ and ‘Solidarity to Calais’.
A Met Police spokesman confirmed that officers had been dispatched to Ebor Street.
‘An appropriate policing plan is in place.’
