Ofsted chief blasts schools in major blow for George Osborne”s Northern Powerhouse plans


Ofsted boss Sir Michael Wilshaw said schools in Liverpool and Manchester were underperforming to such an extent that plans to create a so-called “Northern Powerhouse” would “splutter and die”.

The two cities are the engines that could "transform" the prospects of the entire area, but currently, secondary education in these cities is not up to scratch, and may be getting worse, he argued.
