Margaritis Schinas, a flunky for EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, lost his temper over the label at a press conference.
He insisted that the term wasn”t the right way to describe him while avoiding a journalist”s question.
Mr Schinas is one of 76 spokesmen for the European Commission, supported by a labyrinthine network of press officers and propagandists.
His extensive team are in turn just a fragment of the total army of EU staff, estimated to number as many as 47,000.
He made his thoughts known after a question from an Italian journalist about poison briefings against prime minister Matteo Renzi.
He told the assembled journalists: “Thank you for repeating the term bureaucrats in our face.
“I told you repeatedly we do not like the term for the European Civil Service.
“For the many thousand of colleague who work for the institutions. We do not think that bureaucrats is the way to describe our job.
“Next time you use the term bureaucrat I will answer back saying we are European civil servants working for the common interest of all 28 member states.”
