The shocking footage shows animals being tortured and beaten while still conscious.
The “scandalous” clips recorded by undercover animal rights campaigners in Vigan, southern France, show helpless animals given electric shocks for the amusement of bored staff.
Others show struggling animals – including lambs, sheep, cattle and pigs – stabbed to death while still conscious.
Staff are shown throwing sheep against metal railings and slitting the throats of pigs and cattle without first stunning them, as is required by law.
The vile scenes make a mockery of European legislation designed to ensure humane conditions for slaughterhouse animals.
Johanne Mielcarek, an animal rights activist, described the working environment inside the abattoir as “extremely shocking”.
Slamming wishy-washy EU diktats, she said: “When you look at the European regulations, there isn”t much information about the actual act of slaughter and how it should be carried out. It”s more about how animals shouldn”t be “mistreated”.”
She added: “Even though the workers are stunning the animals before slaughtering them, you can see in the video that it”s not working properly.”
When confronted with the harrowing 4-minute video, abattoir manager Laurent Kauffman slammed his staff”s “outrageous” conduct.
He said: “These are unacceptable acts. I”ve never seen it, I”m not on the site all the time, far from it. But I”ve never seen that and I am disappointed.”
