A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the fatal shooting of a one-year-old girl in her cot.
Officers were called to a home in Compton, Los Angeles, on 9 February following reports of a shooting and found the father of one-year-old Autumn Johnson holding her and crying. The girl was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Ray Patterson, 23, was arrested on Monday. A sheriff’s lieutenant said it appeared the shooting was gang-related and that the gunman was targeting someone who lived in the converted garage where Autumn was shot.
‘This shows a lot of forward progress for the sheriffs out here,’ said Autumn’s grandfather, Jeffrey Wandick.
‘There’s a lot of… unsolved homicides out here that just get swept under.’
The Sheriff’s Department said detectives were continuing to look for ‘additional evidence and suspects.’
