This women has been ordered to pay fines and costs amounting to £2,443 after continuously feeding birds in her garden.

Oxford City council had banned Katherine Spiller, 66, from giving treats to her feathered friends in February 2015 after neighbours complained.

But despite the warning she continued and eventually landed a hefty fine.

‘Like many older people, I’m rather isolated – I enjoy the company of pigeons and I enjoy feeding them,’ the retired library assistant from East Oxford said.

‘I’ve been feeding pigeons for many years, since I was a child.

‘Pigeons are so friendly, and I like that – I’ve had a few favourites over the years and I’ve even named some of them.’

Spiller was handed a community protection notice by Oxford City Council last year after neighbours complained about swarms of pigeons flocking to her house.

But Oxford Magistrates’ Court heard the ‘habitual bird feeder’ failed to abide by the notice, and continued to feed the pigeons at her east Oxford home.

Katherine, who did not attend the hearing, sent a letter to the court admitting she failed to comply with the community protection notice – and she has been left devastated after being told to pay£640 for breaching the order, a £64 victims surcharge and £1,729 prosecution costs.

During the hearing Jeremy Franklin, representing Oxford City Council, said Katherine flouted the notice eight times between August and October 2015, and told magistrates how neighbours reported her to the council for continuing to put out bird seed.

Mr Franklin said the city council might have to take further action to stop Katherine feeding pigeons if she couldn’t change her ways.
