An-ex boxer has suffered bleeding on the brain and is fighting for life after falling down some stairs.
Rachael Buckland, a former Welsh bantamweight, suffered a fractured skull after she hit her head on the floor at her home in St Mellons, Cardiff.
The mum-of-two was left in a coma after undergoing brain surgery on Thursday, and the family are now playing ‘ the waiting game’.
Her husband Mitchell Buckland, 23, is also a professional fighter and has been holding a vigil at her bedside at the University Hospital of Wales.
He said: ‘It’s just a waiting game now so still praying but she’s stable. Please everyone say a prayer for my wife. She is fighting for her life.’
Rachel met her husband while training together at St Joseph’s boxing gym in Newport, Gwent.
Rachel, 25, took time away from her boxing glory after giving birth to children Lorenzo, 2, and one-year-old Ella-Rose.
Tony Borg, boxing coach at St Joseph’s, said: ‘The doctors were hoping the swelling would go down on its own but overnight on Thursday Rachael had an emergency operation. She’s stable but it’s a waiting game at the moment.
‘Mitch is distraught – he can’t speak. He’s at the hospital with all the family.
‘They are a young couple with two young children. What they are going through now is unreal.’
Friends and colleagues at the Tom Toya Lewis pub Rachael worked in are holding a fundraising day for her on Wednesday, October 19.
A JustGiving page has also been set up to raise £5,000 to help the family.
