A Conservative councillor has come under fire for starting a petition calling for supporting the EU to be made an act of treason.

Christian Holliday was the Vote Leave co-ordinator for Guildford, Surrey, prior to the EU referendum, but now he has taken his support for Brexit up a notch.

He genuinely thinks it should be a criminal offence for anyone to support Britain’s EU membership.

The councillor for Burpham has attracted some support, with the petition passing 300 signatures, but has also been heavily criticised for his views.

The petition, created on Friday, calls for the Treason Felony Act to be amended to make ‘supporting UK membership of the EU a crime’.

It reads: ‘The Treason Felony Act be amended to include the following offences: To imagine, devise, promote, work, or encourage others, to support UK becoming a member of the European Union.

‘(and) To conspire with foreign powers to make the UK, or part of the UK, become a member of the EU.’

It would certainly be interesting if this odd amendment was ever passed – mostly to see if the country’s prisons could cope with 48% of the electorate being sent to jail.

And in a pleasing slice of irony, it appears that Mr Holliday’s own constituency doesn’t agree with the sudden and potentially dangerous clampdown on freedom of speech.

In Guildford, 44,000 people in Guildford voted Remain, while 34,000 backed Leave.

But others were really quite angry
