The beautiful array of colours were captured by the MAVEN space probe, which studies the atmosphere of the fourth planet from the Sun.
A video taken from the probe shows around seven hours of the planet’s rotation, with winds swirling colourful cloud formations across its surface.
The south pole of the planet is shown as a stunning purple colour – a shocking change from its regula reddish hue.
Mars’ largest volcano, Olympus Mons, is also clearly visible as a large black spot at the top of the planet, complete with a huge cloud that forms during the day.
However, amateur space fans will unfortunately be unable to admire Mars’ new purple tinge by themselves, as the pictures have been edited to reflect ultraviolet colours that human eyes are not sensitive enough to pick up.
To our eyes, Mars will remain red, thanks to the iron oxide which is prevalent on its surface.
As mankind’s knowledge of Mars continues to grow with the use of numerous space probes and satellites, so too do the legions of UFO hunters convinced they have discovered life on Mars.
A video recently shared online, entitled “NASA What Has Curiosity Rover Detected Here? Explain!!” has attracted thousands of views.
UFO chaser Scott C Waring, of ufosightingsdaily.com, believes the clip of genuine NASA footage is proof of alien life.
He blogged: “Here you see the Curiosity rover drilling into the dirt on Mars and as it is, a small critter is seen walking away from the drill area.
“To top it off, the small creature walks just a little way, before something even bigger stretches out from below a rock and snags it.
“So there is life on Mars, but its a vicious and short life to be had. It is really an extraordinary find, and very lucky.”
