In the clip – filmed using a smartphone – the baby elephant breaks away from its heard when it sees a man swimming in a river.
She jumps in the water and begins ferociously running towards him.
For a moment it looks like she may be behaving territorially and about to attack.
But – as she gets closer and closer to the chap – it becomes clear that she is attempting to rescue him.
Canadian Darrick, 42, says he has an “inseparable bond” with five-year-old Kham La after she was rescued and brought to the enclosure last year.
He said: “Kham Lha was in a really bad way when she came to us.
“She had been tied up and forced to undergo cruel training known as crushing to prepare her to work in the tourist industry.
“We freed her and helped her to recover. She became really close to me and we formed a strong bond.
“I went in the river to show just how remarkable the relationship with humans is. And that if you show warmth and kindness to them, they will treat you well, too.”
But not all elephants are heroic and cute.
