Richard Hewitt was jailed for two years today after he was met by members of Dark Justice in a car park.
The 40-year-old drove 200 miles from his home in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, to Newcastle city centre thinking he was going to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex after he made contact with her on a teen chat room.
Sick Hewitt, who has 26 offences on his record, asked the girl called Jessie for naked selfies and bombarded her with Whatsapp messages asking for sex.
Chillingly, a court heard he told her “I”ll be your first”.
But the perv did not realise the profile was fake and actually set up by Dark Justice, a vigilante group which has helped secure 64 arrests in two years of operation.
And Hewitt was caged at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
Judge Robert Adams said he had “a bad record for sexual offending”.
When Hewitt arrived in Newcastle, Dark Justice blocked his car to stop him leaving.
Speaking outside court today, Dark Justice activist “Scott” said he and his counterpart “Callum” were injured in the struggle in the car park.
Another campaigner was bitten in the arm in the dramatic scuffle.
“Scott” added: “We were on a chat room and he popped up and straightaway messaged us, saying “I would like to meet you”.
“He travelled up the same day.
“He snapped his own phone and bent it like a banana, trying to destroy the evidence.
“He went crazy, he absolutely flipped out. He looks like a chihuahua, but he fought like a pit bull.
“He tried to take my phone. I was a bit shocked at the time. I wasn”t scared, more angry.
“We have been spat on, but never anything like this.”
