An ice age would mean free-flowing rivers would freeze over and snow fields would remain all-year round at lower altitudes.
In June it was revealed the sun had entered the quietest period for more than a century.
The last time activity on the sun remained this low was in February 1906.
“The blank sun is a sign that the solar minimum is approaching and there will be an increasing number of spotless days over the next few years,” Vencore weather said.
During the longest solar minimum on record between 1645 and 1715, the River Thames froze over and “frost fairs” became popular.
This period was known as the Little Ice Age.
Harsh bitter winters were felt all over the northern hemisphere.
