An 89-year-old former soldier has posted an advert asking for a job as he is ‘dying of boredom’ after the death of his wife two years ago.

Pick-up driver reverses into lorry then smashes window to get to men inside

Joe Bartley posted an advert saying, ‘Senior citizen 89 seeks employment in Paignton area. 20hrs+ per week. Still able to clean, light gardening, DIY and anything.

‘I have references. Old soldier, airborne services. Save me from dying of boredom!

The widower says he is sick of sitting at home with nothing to do – and says he has felt like he is in ‘solitary confinement’ since his wife died.

The veteran was a member of the Airborne Forces and served with the Army in Palestine just after the Second World War and was later self employed as a signwriter.

He only retired aged 83.

He said: ‘I was a sign writer by trade and have always been an active man.

‘I am still active enough now. My wife died two years ago and I am not a television person. I like reading but you can’t do that all the time and it has been like I have been living in solitary confinement.

‘I just want to get a job for five hours a day – to earn enough to pay the rent.

‘I am on housing benefit but I would much rather work and pay my own way which I have done my whole life. I am old fashioned like that.
