Police officers have shot and injured a 31-year-old man in a Hull street.

A BBC reporter at a police cordon at Charles Street said witnesses had reported seeing a man with an axe and hearing gunshots.

Humberside Police said armed officers had earlier been sent to Holderness Road “following reports of concerns for the safety of the public in relation to a man seen near the Post Office”.

The man is receiving medical treatment and his condition is unknown.

The force said: “An investigation is under way and the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”

Officers were deployed shortly before 09:20 GMT and police said the man was shot nearly 20 minutes later.

Police added: “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time.”
