He gave the fast food burger to the world: those two patties, sandwiched between buns with a square of rubbery cheese and limp lettuce.

It somehow tasted so, so good, despite everything we know about obesity rates and empty calories.

Now, nearly 50 years after the first Big Mac went on sale, its creator Michael Dilligatti has died.

Despite his love for fast food, Michael, known to friends as ‘Jim’, lived to the impressive age of 98

He was running a McDonald’s franchise in Pittsburgh at the time, when he invented the chain’s signature burger with two all-beef patties, ‘special sauce,’ lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun.

McDonald’s resisted the idea of selling it elsewhere at first because its simple lineup of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries and shakes was selling well.

But it went down well with customers so Delligatti offered it at his 47 restaurants – and then it went national in 1968.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Kerry Ford confirmed that Delligatti died at home surrounded by his family on Monday night.

We thought now would be a good time to look at Big Macs around the world… Sorry if this makes you feel hungry.
