M1 traffic chaos Huge lorry fire leaves motorists stranded in huge queues

The A38 in Derbyshire is closed in both directions between Alfreton and J28 of the M1 following a lorry fire.

Commuters are being advised there are major delays on the route with emergency services telling people to avoid the area.

A portable toilet block has been deployed to allow stranded motorists the chance to relieve themselves.

Structural engineers are on the scene inspecting the bridge above where the bin lorry burst into flames.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: “The A38 remains closed in both directions from Alfreton to the junction with the M1.

“It is expected that the road will remain closed into the early evening.”
