GERMAN ELECTION Pressure on Merkel as Schulz wins 100% of party vote to stand against her


Martin Schulz, former president of the European Parliament, trails Mr Merkel by just one per cent in the latest opinion poll and feels the unanimous support of his party will give him the edge on election day.

The unprecedented vote — his predecessor Sigmar Gabriel won 74.3 per cent two years ago — certainly gives Mr Schulz a clear mandate as he prepares for the September elections.
